FOA OMG!!1!: Pontiak

I'm not usually one for stoner-sludge-type guitar rock, but man, is Virginia's Pontiak an exception. I missed them when they did an in-store at Criminal Records during Bonnaroo (exasperated sigh), but I've been spinning their April Thrill Jockey release Maker since then anyway. I caught wind of the band when they passed through Atlanta last year after releasing Sun on Sun (these guys record quickly). The three Carney brothers hail from the Blue Ridge, and can perhaps thank their familial relationship for the seamlessness with which they perform and record. Live, they were a positive force, dark and menacing but somehow buoyant and bright, too. Recorded, listening to Pontiak feels like walking into a cave on a hot, sunny day. You're a little blinded, but it's cool in here, and somehow the sheer depth of it relaxes.

Maker is almost minimalist. Though vocals do play an important role in the album, they're few and far between. That's because for Pontiak, less is more. Lead-off "Laywayed" stops abruptly after the intro and inspires that kind of everyone-inhales-at-once tension bands sometimes employ live. Some tracks, like "Wax Worship," begin or end with lengthy sound collages--they drone--and concentrate more on waves and textures than any pop sensibilities. "Wax Worship"'s final minutes feature vocals reminiscent of Gregorian chants or some type of cult choir situation. You can almost hear the creepy ceremonial hooded robes.

"Seminal Shining," one of Maker's shortest track, departs from all of this. It's wholly and hypnotically different, utilizing Spanish-style guitar and low vocals throughout the length of the song. Maybe a technique of drone and ambient music comes through here; it's another example of the effectiveness yielded by lulling an audience into a certain repetitive framework before startlingly changing style or key. I like it.

Why Bonnaroo is going to ruin my life, Part 2

I knew there was another one! Pontiak, Virginia's talented (and prolific!) stoner-guitar rockers, are passing through Atlanta on their way to Athens June 13. The three brothers will be playing an in-store at Criminal Records at 5:30. Wish I could go!! They're extremely impressive live, cascading wall-after-wall of sound, feedback, distortion...Stay tuned to FOA for a review of their new album Maker, which released in April via Thrill Jockey. And go catch the show for me!

Marnie Stern, Okkervil River and Pontiak...gasping for air

So it certainly has been a struggle keeping everything straight this past couple of months. Can barely keep my head above water. Lemme tell you, Paste:Local Atlanta has me running in circles most of the time. (SO YOU SHOULD PROBABLY READ IT EVERY DAY AND LEAVE COMMENTS.) I don't even get much time to listen and digest new music.

A couple of new things I've stumbled upon, despite the fact that I basically live in a cave (and by "a cave," I mean "stressed out alone in my living room"...pity the lonely freelancer):

1. Marnie Stern, who rocks. I mean really rocks. I don't have the album, but I will most certainly be buying it or stealing it from Geoff soon. Have a listen to the song that converted me.

Transformer - Marnie Stern

2. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
I got a record player! And this was my third vinyl purchase! I just got into their previous record, The Stage Names, a couple of months back, and while their specific sound aesthetic doesn't speak to me automatically, Will Sheff's lyricism is truly second-to-none. He paints poetic pictures-- I love it. The new album hasn't totally sunken in for me, but I'm spinning it on the turntable over and over...maybe I'll wear out my first record!

Lost Coastlines - Okkervil River

3. Pontiak played at one of Have You Heard's Monday night shows at 97 Estoria about a month back, and their set was so compelling that I bought their CD. Have a listen!

3. White Hands - Pontiak

Enjoy, and reciprocate. Needs the new musics! (And all these press release emails are starting to hurt my head.)
